Cuny-Zink Softball started over 30 years ago in Dayton through the vision of two men, George Cuny and Jim Zink, each of whom had played ball for years, but had finally aged out of the open leagues at that time. Starting with just two teams, Cuny and Zink wanted to create a softball league for those aged 50-plus who still wanted to play competitive softball in the area.
Their Cuny-Zink American League soon attracted more players and even sparked a new traveling league called the Dayton Legends. Many of the Cuny-Zink and Dayton Legend players are drawn from the Dayton/Springfield and Cincinnati areas, but historically, the leagues have garnered the interest and participation of players all across Southwest Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan.
Today, in the spirit of the late Donnie Deaton’s challenge to “keep softball alive in Dayton and this region,” we have launched this new web site (powered by Team Sideline) and will soon introduce a companion mobile app for the National League.
Cuny-Zink Softball currently features four divisions in the region:
- The National League – A competitive league now including players aged 45 and over
- The Central League – A competitive league for players 60 and over
- The American League – A recreational league for players in their 60s, 70s and 80s
- The Senior Fall League – A competitive league for players 60 and over
Each of the leagues has an annual individual player draft, usually conducted in March or April, with player and age exceptions and exclusions at the discretion of each league director/commissioner.
